“I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.” 2 Timothy 1:5
Mother’s Day is one of the most special days of the year! We are told there are more telephone calls made on Mother’s Day, more floral arrangements and chocolate sent than any other day of the year! It’s a time when we remember the special person who brought us into the world. Whether you are a mother of children or not, everyone has a mother and if you’re fortunate, you might have a grandmother and great-grandmother!
I was struck by some of the comments on Facebook reflecting on their mothers. We tend to remember the good things, the important spiritual things our mother’s taught us and forget the mistakes they might have made. My own memory of my mother was very short-lived. She went to be with Jesus after 44 short years on earth. I was 16 years old at the time, but I remember her words and the spiritual example she lived out in our home. When I became a mother, I tried to pattern my mothering skills to what she would have said and done. For those of us who had godly mothers, that is likely the pattern.
Here are some of the sweet comments that inspired me, remembering the good times:
“I’ll never forget helping you teach Sunday school and hearing you tell the story with animation, humor and over-acting. The kids hung on every word. You told me to forget about myself and focus on the kids. Self- consciousness is boring and selfish.”
“Happy Mother’s Day Mom! You made my childhood rich and hilarious and always took such good care of us! Our kids love their grandma – you are a blessing!”
“Remembering my wonderful mother today! It’s been 30 years since she left us and we still miss her!”
“My dear mom exchanged her earthly body for her heavenly one this morning. She will experience her first Mother’s Day in heaven. Happy Mother’s Day, Mom!”
“Mom, we’ve hired a few people to fill-in for you while you relax on Mother’s Day: teacher, nurse, chef, taxi service, housekeeper, pastor and clown!” Do you realize how valuable they are?
“Happy Mother’s Day, Mom! I love you and miss being with you today! I am soooo blessed to call you MOM and can’t wait to see you soon!!!!”
“He was born when I was 16. I chose not to abort my baby. Although I was scared and humiliated, look at what God has done with his life!” She faced challenges as a single mother, but both she and her baby boy have grown into individuals with strength, faith, joy and determination.
“I want to brag about my mom because she doesn’t get enough credit for all she does……she is so selfless and such a loving, caring person. She amazes me in so many ways. I love you mom with all my heart and appreciate everything you do for us.”
If you had a mother who brought you to the feet of Jesus, take time to thank her! If she taught you to take your cares and needs to Jesus, thank her! If she took you to Sunday school and taught you to worship God with humility and respect, thank her! If she taught you to approach God with conviction and confidence and to love His Word, thank her!
