This is one of the most interesting stories in the Bible because it describes several things at once that Jesus does to take care of His servants! First of all, He had used Peter’s boat to preach from. Do you really think He would use something of yours and not more than abundantly pay you back? He is never our debtor! His paybacks are 50, 100, 1,000! In addition the treasure is stored up for us in heaven! And Peter is the one who tells us about it in his first letter! They can’t rust out, wear out or become spoiled. Furthermore, they are kept in heaven not in the Federal Reserve!
Secondly, Jesus is really telling Peter to put out his nets into the deepest water because that’s where the greatest catches are found! Have you found that yet? In Ezekiel 47 there are 3 levels of water mentioned…ankle deep…knee deep…waist deep…and at the last level no man could cross over. The thing is, it was flowing! It’s a picture of the Spirit….moving….flowing…bringing life.
The water is coming out from under the throne of God! It’s fresh! Blessing! Life! It turns salt water into fresh! Fruit trees will grow on both banks of the River, their leaves will not wither! Do you want to have a fruitful life like that ? Then you gotta go out into the deep water where the REAL catches are! Go deep! Go long! Not just dipping your little toes in the shallow end or your ankles!
Jesus went into deep waters for you! The waters of the cross! What a catch! He says to YOU today, ” Come, follow Me and I will make you fishers of men!” What do you want to do with your life, catch worms, minnows or large fish? Go deep!
Let’s go!
