But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear; you are of more value than many sparrows.
Luke 12:7
In the work of the Lord, we should never undervalue the little things. Our Lord sees the sparrow fall and He has numbered the hairs of our heads! The person who gives a cup of cold water in the name of Jesus will be rewarded.
Loren Eiseley tells the story of an older man who was in the habit of walking the beach each morning before he began his work. During the night, a storm had passed and as he walked along the shore, he noticed the beach littered with starfish. As far as his eye could see, in both directions, the sand was littered with the star shaped fish. Off in the distance, he noticed a small boy, bending over and throwing something into the sea. As the man approached the boy, he saw he was throwing starfish back into the water.
The man stopped and said to the boy, “Good morning! May I ask what you are doing?” The young boy paused, looked up and replied, “Throwing starfish back into the ocean. The tide has washed them up onto the beach and they can’t swim back by themselves. When the sun gets high, they will die, unless I throw them back.”
The man replied, “But there must be tens of thousands of starfish on this beach. I’m afraid you won’t really be able to make much of a difference.”
The boy bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it as far as he could into the ocean. Then he turned, smiled and said, “It made a difference to that one!”
Some people refuse to do anything because they are not able to do something great in the eyes of men. But, God doesn’t ask us to do great things, He only asks us to do what we can! A successful church is comprised of many little things added together. A single stone will not make a house, but many stones together will. One soldier cannot be an army, but many soldiers together can. We are stones in the Lord’s house and soldiers in His army. You or I alone cannot do the work God has for the church to do, but all together we can! We might think our presence won’t be missed in Sunday school, another might think they will not be missed at the prayer meeting. Another might think his financial contribution is so small, it is inconsequential. When others feel the same way and miss the services and stop giving, the power of the church is greatly diminished. Little things are important!
When God called Moses at the burning bush, Moses was reluctant and didn’t think the people would believe him or listen to him. God said, “What is that in your hand, Moses?” “A staff,” he replied. The Lord said, “Throw it on the ground.” And later, “Now go, I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.” Exodus 4:2-3, 12. So, I ask you, what is in your hand that you can do for Jesus? We are all given talents useful for the Master! Years ago, in Sunday School, we sang a song called “Little Things.”
“Shamgar had an ox goad; Rahab had a string.
Gideon had a trumpet; David had a sling.
Samson had a jawbone; Moses had a rod.
Dorcas had a needle; All were used for God.”
Little things are important to God!
