“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities, all things were created by Him and for Him.” Colossians 1:15-16
Several years ago, we visited the Tower of London and saw the Crown Jewels. It is unforgettable to see The Star of Africa, valued at $400 million. The Crown Jewels are a symbol of the British monarchy and the glory of the Empire. Many estimate the worth of the collection between $4-8 billion, USD. In fact, the stories and legends surrounding this collection are unparalled. As a result, no company is willing to insure them, so their true value may never be known! But, that is nothing compared to the treasure we have as we visit the Tower of Colossians and view the glories of Christ.
Sometimes, we have too low a view of Who God is, His majesty, His holiness, His power, His greatness. We have emphasized familiarity with Jesus so much we tend to de-emphasize the glories of His Person! God made man in His image and man has been trying to return the favor ever since!
For a moment, let’s look at the glories of Jesus, His pre-eminence over creation, over the invisible world, over the church and over everything and let it change our lives! A. Tozer said: “The moment we make up our minds to exalt God over all, we step out of the world’s parade!”
- Moses met God at the burning bush and his life was forever changed. Exodus 3
- Job said, “My eyes have seen you and I repent in dust and ashes.” Job 42:6
- Isaiah said, “My eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.” Isaiah 6:5
- Thomas said, “My Lord and my God!” John 20:28
- John said, “When I saw Him, I fell at His feet as though dead.” Revelation 1:17
The time is coming “when every knee shall bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father!” Romans 14:11.
“He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together,” Col. 1:17 What an amazing statement! Countless stars and their satellites traveling through space are all controlled by Christ! He controls the universe. If the moon was just a little closer, we would have tsunamis crashing into cities. If the sun was a little closer, life on our planet could not exist. We have just the right amount of oxygen to survive. Who set the thermostat? Jesus! He created the universe, He claims the universe, He controls the universe. Even when Jesus was on the cross, He held all things together! Amazing power under control!
“He is the Head of the body, the Church,”Col. 1:18 Think of the impact of those words on that little group of believers meeting in Philemon’s house. They were part of God’s new creation, the Church. He created something powerful at Pentecost. Christ is the Head! No earthly pontiff, no patriarch, no priest, no pastor, only Christ!
BEHOLD YOUR GOD!!
